About Food Corporation of India – FCI:

In the year 1964, it was founded. It was set up in on January 1965 under the Food Corporation Act 1964. It basically buys and markets wheat and rice for the Indian government. It purchases both domestically grown and imported grains.

It keeps the stockpiles in its own warehouses. During episodic sales, it controls and manages the domestic grain supply as well as regulating the market prices for those commodities.

It is one of Asia’s largest companies. It operates under the direction of the food ministry of the Indian government. The first district office of FCI was at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, however, headquarter is situated in New Delhi, India.

The main products of FCI are Wheat and Rice and the main service is the execution of Government policies.

It is probably the largest supply chain management in Asia and Second in the world. It operates through 5 Zonal offices and 24 Regional offices. It purchases approximately 15 to 20% of India’s wheat output and 12 to 15% of rice output every year.

Objectives of Food Corporation of India:

It was set up to execute the following objectives of the National Food Policy. They are,

  • Protect the interests of the farmers by effective price support operations.
  • To provide farmers remunerative prices.
  • To make food grains available at reasonable prices.
  • As per the measure of Food Security of India, maintain buffer stocks of grains.
  • Market interference for price stabilization.

Organizational Structure of FCI:

As mentioned earlier there are five zonal offices of FCI. They are as,

  • Zonal Office (North)
  • Zonal Office (East)
  • Zonal office (West)
  • Zonal office (South)
  • Zonal office (North – East)

It operates through District Offices which are headed by an Assistant General Manager designated as Area Manager. All regional offices are responsible to report Zonal offices and Zonal offices report headquarter.
